MATTHEW ISHAM

Matt Isham is managing director of the George and Ann Richards Civil War Era Center at The Pennsylvania State University and managing editor of The Journal of the Civil War Era.

His dissertation examined how partisan newspaper editors employed newspaper networks to build party organizations in the antebellum North. His essay, “‘A Press that Speaks its Opinions Frankly and Openly and Fearlessly’: the Contentious Relationship between the Democratic Press and the Party in the Antebellum North” appeared  in This Distracted and Anarchical People: New Answers for Old Questions About the Civil War Era North, edited by Andrew Slap and Michael Smith, (Fordham University Press, 2013).
